In any standard vehicle, there are built-in mechanisms to give you clues into the health of your vehicle. There are warning lights such as low tire pressure, low oil, temperature, windshield washer fluid, and check engine. All of these lights play a role in warning you that something is not right in your vehicle. If you pay attention to those lights and correct what is malfunctioning, your vehicle has a better chance of having a longer life. Your body also has a built-in warning system. This warning system is called “pain”. Your body will try to get your attention by creating a pain signal in hopes that you will do something about it. Pain serves as the “check engine” light in your body.

Are you paying attention to your “check engine” light?

I am willing to bet that each person, at some point in their life, has experienced a “check engine” light problem in their body. Have you ever been in pain and did nothing about it? Unfortunately, we see this all too often in our office. Many people wait until the pain has settled in for months at a time before seeking care. When pain becomes chronic, it usually takes much longer to get to the root of the problem. The moral of the story is: when your body’s “check engine” light is on, get it checked out.

Getting to the root of the problem

I think we all know at least one person who drives an older vehicle with many warning lights displayed on the dashboard. I once knew someone who took their car to a mechanic friend who did just enough to get the warning lights to turn off in order to pass safety and emissions tests. Although this person was able to cheat the system for now, how long could he go before his vehicle stopped working? There are things we can do for pain that will temporarily shut off our “check engine” light. Often, taking over-the-counter pain medication will only mask the symptoms and make us believe the problem has gone away. The pain may be reduced, but has the problem actually gone away? It is vital to get to the root of the problem so that we don’t need to experience a chronic “check engine” light.

Chiropractors and Mechanics

If your car breaks down, then it is only logical to take it to someone who can actually address the underlying cause of the problem. Mechanics and technicians are specifically trained to diagnose any problem that may arise in your vehicle. Their job is to not only get the “check engine” light to turn off but to make sure the car is running smoothly and stays that way. Chiropractors do just that, but for the body. Chiropractors are specifically trained to get to the root of the problem so that your body no longer needs pain (“check engine” light). So if you are dealing with aches and pains, and especially if you have been experiencing them for a while, it’s time to contact your local chiropractor to get your body running smoothly again.
