Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common problem that we encounter at Elite Chiropractic and Performance Center. There is a wide variety of patients who experience this problem who also don’t know that chiropractic is a great treatment option. So what is carpal tunnel syndrome and how can chiropractic help?
What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The carpal tunnel is comprised of a thick transverse carpal ligament on the front and wrist bones on the back. It is called a tunnel because it holds in place the tendons of your forearm along with a very important nerve—the median nerve. When the tendons within this tunnel become inflamed, compression can occur at the site. This compression can lead to pain and soreness in the wrist along with tingling and numbness in the thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, and possibly half of the ring finger.
Causes Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
These are some of the most common causes of carpal tunnel syndrome:
- Overuse injuries to your wrist (e.g. typing for long hours, playing piano, etc.)
- Any activity that forces you to repeatedly bend or extend your wrist such as painting or writing
- Frequently operating hand tools, especially those that tend to vibrate (e.g. construction workers)
Symptoms Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
The most common signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:
- Pain at the wrist
- Tingling and/or numbness in the thumb, pointer, middle and half of the ring finger
- Weakness in the wrist
How Chiropractic Can Help With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Treatments at Elite Chiropractic for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can include a variety of methods. Adjustments to the neck are beneficial since the neck serves as the source of all of the nerves in your arm and hand. When these nerves are irritated you can develop nerve-like symptoms in your wrists or hands.
Adjustments made to your wrist are very helpful. Whenever your wrist bones become restricted, it can begin to irritate the tendons passing through the carpal tunnel. When this happens, inflammation can restrict the passageway for the median nerve which can lead to tingling and numbness in your wrist and hands.
Soft tissue therapy is another effective treatment performed by the chiropractors at Elite chiropractic. When carpal tunnel begins to develop, the muscles in your forearm become overly tight. When this happens, you can experience increased pain through the wrist as well. Making sure these muscle are as loose as possible will help decrease your wrist irritation. Your doctor will use specific therapies to reduce pain and promote healing.
