The end of summer brings back fond memories of back-to-school time. It was always exciting to get to see familiar faces and start a new routine. As time went on school naturally became more challenging. New challenges always brought about new resources. Many of these resources came in the form of heavy textbooks or laptop computers in this we have to take care of our back and shoulders by learning how to safely wear a backpack. This would result in heavier-than-normal backpacks that we would have to lug around the school.
It goes without saying that carrying around a heavy backpack has the potential of causing spinal injuries. We have provided a backpack safety guide with some tips on how to properly wear a backpack to help minimize the risk of spinal problems. Feel free to download our backpack safety guide to share with your friends.
Backpack safety checklist:
- Your child’s backpack weighs less than 10% of their total body weight
- The bottom of the backpack does NOT hang more than 4 inches below their waistline
- There are individual compartments inside the backpack
- Pointy or bulky items are placed away from the area that is resting against your child’s back
- Backpack straps are placed on both shoulders
- Shoulder straps are adjusted to keep the backpack close to your child’s back
It is also recommended to bring your child in on a regular basis to make sure their spines are aligned to avoid any unnecessary wear and tear.
We hope you and your families have a fabulous start to this school year and wish you all the best as you finish off the year.
